Tyrone has a real problem with authority and never believes in school. He is the kind of kid that always has something to say about everything whether its appropriate or not. Something changes however, after Mr. Ward introduces the class to poetry from the Harlem Renaissance and an event named "Open Mike Fridays."
This event enables the students to read poetry to the class that they have written. Tyrone and most of the class thought of it as a joke in the beginning and didnt take it quite as serious until they started to hear their fellow students read and some of the brilliance they came up with. apparently in this book times were hard and everyone wanted to fit in but people realized that it doesnt matter what other people think of you, only what you think of yourself.
For example, in the class there was this kid named Devon who everyone knew as a big basketball player. His nickname was "jump shot" and he hated it, his real love was reading but he never wanted anyone to know because apparently he thought black men weren't smart. that chanded after this event and he was a very good writer.
Mr. Ward was able to change the way these kids looked at life just from them reading their work aloud. This was a very good book, my favorite ine on the list.

Bronx Masquerade
This book Bronx Masquerade starts off slow but really picks it up in the middle of the story with the imput and enthusiasm of the students from a part of town no smart person would be at certain times of day. What triggers the enthusiasm from the students is when their teacher Mr. Ward introduces them to some poetry from the Harlem Renaissance. Their poetry holds some real eye openers.
